Former Capcom artist Kinu Nishimura has made a lasting impact on the Street Fighter franchise with her iconic artwork. Her contributions continue to influence the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, where director Takayuki Nakayama highlighted that the new outfit designs for four characters are inspired by Nishimura’s original style.
Nishimura recalled her creative process, reflecting on her work for the Street Fighter 2 exhibition. Emphasizing the vibrant “bubble era,” she aimed to capture the era’s essence, despite her reservations about certain artistic choices, such as Chun-Li’s muscular depiction. She collaborated closely with fellow artist Shoei Okano to refine concepts for iconic characters like Ryu and Sagat.
Notably, the designs have evolved; for instance, Cammy now wears a cat necklace instead of a cross, signaling a shift away from religious imagery. Additionally, Vega’s portrayal in the artwork showcases a striking image with his mask and minimalism, emphasizing the character’s mysterious allure.
